Overview

About this tour

This is the seven-day Rongai, and the extra day is the whole argument for it. Day four is spent at Mawenzi Tarn walking two to three hours up towards Mawenzi and back down again rather than sitting around camp, which is the difference between reaching Kibo acclimatised and reaching it tired.

Everything else is the northern approach: the quietest flank of Kilimanjaro, running along the Kenyan border, sitting in the rain shadow and therefore the safest bet in the wetter months. Gentle walking through maize fields and pine forest to begin, then the cave camps, then Mawenzi Tarn beneath its spires before the saddle crossing to Kibo and the midnight summit push. If your schedule can absorb the extra day, take it. Park fees, camping and hut fees, three meals a day, drinking water, a sleeping bag, porters, cook, guide and your summit certificate are included.

Detailed itinerary

After breakfast you drive to register at the Marangu park gate, then transfer roughly two and a half hours to the Rongai trailhead. You meet your guide and porters and begin walking from Nale Moru village. The path winds across maize fields, enters pine forest and climbs gently through it. Nothing today is steep; it is a pleasant walk through fine country.

Hiking time: 5 hours
Distance: about 8 km
Habitat: Montane forest

Today’s trek continues towards Kibo by way of Second Cave at 3,450m, reaching Kikelewa Cave at around 3,600m. The views widen considerably as the moorland opens out around you. Water is drawn from a stream just below camp, a short walk downhill. Overnight at Kikelewa Caves.

Hiking time: 6 to 7 hours
Habitat: Moorland

A short but steep climb up grassy slopes, with excellent views across this wilderness side of the mountain. The vegetation zone ends shortly before you reach camp at Mawenzi Tarn, set beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon is for acclimatising and exploring around camp.

Hiking time: 3 to 4 hours
Habitat: Moorland

This is your extra day, and you will not spend it sitting at camp. The higher success rate of the seven-day itinerary comes almost entirely from today’s walk. You start the morning as you would any other on the mountain and then head up towards Mawenzi, climbing for two to three hours depending on how you feel and how you are moving, before turning back. The round trip usually runs three to five hours. A second night at Mawenzi Tarn.

You continue up the east side of Kibo, crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, four to five hours to Kibo Hut. The rest of the day is rest and preparation, because the final ascent begins around midnight. Overnight at Kibo camp.

Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert

Up around 23:30 for tea and biscuits, then out into the dark, and this is where it gets genuinely hard. A rocky path leads to Hans Meyer Cave at 5,150m, a good place to rest, and from there the trail zigzags up to Gillman’s Point at 5,681m on the crater rim. That section is very steep and deep in stone scree, and it is the most demanding part of the route. Move slowly. From Gillman’s you will usually have snow underfoot all the way to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m, the highest point in Africa. The weather decides how long you can stay before the descent to Kibo Hut, and after a short rest you gather your gear and head down to Horombo for the night.

Hiking time: 8 hours to Uhuru, 6 hours down to Horombo
Distance: 6 km ascent, 21 km descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

After breakfast you continue down, about six hours, passing Mandara Hut and on to Marangu gate, where you sign the register and certificates are issued: green for Gillman’s Point at 5,681m, gold for Uhuru Peak at 5,895m. You are then driven back to Moshi or Arusha for a long-overdue hot shower and an overnight at a budget hotel.

Hiking time: 6 hours
Distance: about 27 km
