Beneath Kilimanjaro's shadow

Amboseli National Park is Kenya’s most iconic elephant safari destination. It lies in southern Kajiado County, close to the Tanzanian border, where the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro rises above open plains, dry lake beds and bright green swamps.

The park holds some of Africa’s largest and best-studied elephant herds. Spring-fed swamps keep water on the plains all year, drawing buffalo, lion, hippo and hundreds of bird species even in the driest months, while Maasai communities live alongside the wildlife just beyond the boundary.

Amboseli questions, answered

Still wondering about something? Ask our Nairobi team any time on WhatsApp.

Where is Amboseli National Park?

Amboseli is in Kajiado County in southern Kenya, close to the border with Tanzania and at the northern foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is about 240 km south-east of Nairobi.

How many days do you need in Amboseli?

Two to three days is ideal. It gives you several game drives and a good chance of a clear morning view of Kilimanjaro. Many guests pair it with Tsavo, Lake Naivasha or the Maasai Mara.

What is the best time to visit Amboseli?

June to October and January to February are the driest months, when wildlife gathers around the swamps and the mountain is often clear. March to May brings the rains, lower rates and fewer visitors.

Can you see Mount Kilimanjaro from Amboseli?

Yes, on clear days. Early morning and late afternoon give the best chance, as clouds often gather around the summit in the middle of the day.

Can you see the Big Five in Amboseli?

Elephant, buffalo and lion are seen regularly and leopard occasionally. Rhino are not a feature of Amboseli, so add Lake Nakuru or Ol Pejeta if rhino are a priority.

Can Amboseli be combined with other parks?

Yes. Amboseli combines well with Tsavo West and Tsavo East, Lake Naivasha, the Maasai Mara or a beach stay at Diani, and several of our itineraries continue into Tanzania.
