Rongai comes at Kilimanjaro from the north-east, up the side that borders Kenya, and it is the quietest of the main routes by a wide margin. You will pass very few other groups. The northern flank also sits in the mountain’s rain shadow, which makes this the most dependable choice if you are climbing during the wetter months.
The walking starts gently at Nale Moru, through maize fields into pine forest, then climbs by the cave camps to Mawenzi Tarn, which sits directly beneath the spires of Mawenzi and is one of the finest campsites on the mountain. You cross the saddle to Kibo Hut and go for the summit at midnight, reaching Gillman’s Point and then Uhuru at 5,895m, descending the Marangu side to Horombo. This is the shorter of our two Rongai options; if you can spare the time, the seven-day version has a better summit record. Park fees, camping and hut fees, three meals a day, drinking water, a sleeping bag, porters, cook, guide and your certificate are included.
