Machame is the one people call the Whiskey Route: harder work than Marangu, and with a considerably better record for getting climbers to the top. The reason is the shape of the profile rather than anything heroic about the walking. It lets you trek high and sleep low, which is precisely what the body needs in order to acclimatise.
You climb through rainforest to Machame Camp, cross the Shira Plateau, then take in Lava Tower at 4,630m before dropping back to Barranco at 3,960m. That day finishes at close to the height it began and does more for your chances than any other on the mountain. From there it is the Barranco Wall and the Karanga Valley to Barafu, then the midnight push to Stella Point and Uhuru. You sleep in tents throughout. Park fees, camping fees, three meals a day, drinking water, a sleeping bag, porters, cook and guide are included.
