Overview

About this tour

Going up Sirimon and down Chogoria is widely held to be the best way to do Mount Kenya, because you cross the mountain instead of walking back down your own footprints. The climb rises through forest and moorland to Shipton’s, takes a full acclimatisation day around Kami Hut and the Hausberg Tarns, then puts you on Point Lenana at first light from Austrian Hut.

The Chogoria descent is the reward, dropping past Minto’s Hut through the most dramatic country on the mountain. That dedicated acclimatisation day is the reason we push this version over a straight up-and-down: it changes how summit morning feels. Park fees, full board, porters, cook, guide and summit certificate are included.

Day by day

Detailed itinerary

Your guide meets you at the airport or your hotel for breakfast and a full briefing on the trek. You leave Nairobi by shared transport, private transfer available if you prefer, reaching Nanyuki for lunch. On to the Sirimon park gate at 2,440m, an hour away. From the gate the track climbs through forest, turning to heathland after about three hours, and roughly three and a half hours in it veers right to Old Moses Camp at 3,300m. Dinner and overnight.

Uphill on the track, forking left at the junction. About an hour from Old Moses you cross the Ontulili River; go right, contouring through moorland and crossing Liki North, then climb into the Mackinder Valley with the main peaks at its head. Dinner and overnight at Shipton’s, 4,200m.

An acclimatisation day, and the one that makes this itinerary work. You walk to Kami Hut and down to the Hausberg and Nanyuki Tarns, then climb back up to Austrian Hut. Your guide will brief you on conditions higher up. Dinner and overnight.

Away at 3am up the steep stony quarry through the cliff, with the ground opening towards Lower Hall Tarns, reaching Point Lenana at around 6:30am after about three hours. Sunrise from the summit, then a two-hour descent to Minto’s Hut for breakfast and on down the Chogoria side to the Meru Mount Kenya Bandas at 2,950m. Dinner and overnight under canvas.

A two-hour, 15km walk down to the forest clearance, where a 4×4 transfer, available at extra cost, takes you to Chogoria village to connect with your shared transport back to Nairobi.
