Overview

About this tour

Paradise Lost sits at Kiambu on the northern edge of Nairobi, fifty-four green acres built around a prehistoric cave system and a waterfall. The caves were used as a hideout by Mau Mau fighters during the independence struggle, and the guided walk takes you through the chambers and out along a path that runs behind the falling water.

The rest of the site is a boating lake, camel and horse riding, fishing, nature trails, a butterfly area and picnic lawns under indigenous trees. This is a relaxed half day rather than a wildlife experience, and it is where Nairobi families go at weekends. Worth choosing if you want somewhere green without a long drive. Entrance fees, transfers, drinking water and a guide are included.

Day by day

Detailed itinerary

Your driver-guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel and drives out to Paradise Lost at Kiambu, about 45 minutes depending on how the traffic behaves.

A guided walk through the prehistoric cave system, used as a hideout by Mau Mau fighters during the fight for independence, following the path through the chambers and out behind the waterfall. Your guide covers both the geology of the caves and the part they played in that period of Kenyan history.

Free time in the grounds. A boat on the lake, camel or horse riding, fishing, the butterfly area, or just the nature trails through indigenous woodland; these are paid for separately on site. There is a restaurant and there are picnic lawns if you want to eat before the drive back to Nairobi.
